Breakdown: My New Piece (after I’ve heard it)

This is an evaluation sheet for students to use when they receive a new piece and have already sight-read through it or listened to it.   For beginner students I prefer that they sight read to get their first taste of the sound.  That way I know they’re not trying to learn it by ear after hearing me play it!

I use this sheet as a follow-up to the “Breakdown: Before I’ve Heard It” version that students fill out to make observations and predictions about the piece just by initially looking at it.   I like using these evaluations because they force students to think critically about their own learning process.  By getting to know a piece before they dive in, they set expectations and are less likely to approach the piece wearing their “dry-notes-and-rhythms blinders,” as I like to call them!
